Sit

If you haven’t already, now is a good time to teach your dog how to sit. To teach this behavior, hold a tasty treat in your hand and hold it up to your dog’s nose. Slowly raise the cookie to help your dog look up and sit down. Mark and reward the behavior.

Once your dog gets the hang of the idea, name the behavior “sit,” and try luring your dog with an empty hand. Once your dog sits, promptly mark and give a treat from the other hand while they remain in position.

If your dog already has an understanding of “sit” without a lure, practice the behavior in as many places as you can this week. Make sure your dog can perform the behavior inside, outside, at the pet store, at the park, and near a variety of distractions.
