A chin rest is a great behavior to teach your dog, and there a lot of practical applications for it, especially when you’re talking about cooperative care or husbandry. You’re going to use a chin rest in this class to help build other behaviors that you’ll be working on in the coming weeks and continue on in Puppy Skills 2.

To teach a chin rest:

  • Place your hand palm up close to your dog’s nose. Mark and reward any sniffing, touching or other interaction with your dog’s head and your hand.
  • Narrow down your criteria, only marking/rewarding nose or chin touches to your hand, then finally to only chin touches.
